The key to effective parenting is recognizing that first and foremost we are called to be teachers of our children. Parenting at the Speed of Life© introduces parents, teachers, and other adult guides to three basic tools for teaching children and young people the skills necessary to build healthy relationships throughout life. Practice in implementing these tools is an essential part of this presentation/workshop.

Flashing Your Brights© - Caring in Difficult Times
Flashing Your Brights® - Caring in Difficult Times presents a series of five tools to support young people and adults alike in being effective helpers for both peers and family members when dealing with difficult times. This interactive presentation will help you to address issues such as problem drinking (or other drug use), eating disorders, suicidal concerns, and other tough issues. Practice in implementing these tools is an essential part of this presentation/workshop.

  • How to say you care
  • How to say what you know
  • How to set your boundaries
  • How to share hope
Dare to care by participating in Flashing Your Brights® - Caring in Difficult Times

EDUCATION and PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
As an educator, trainer, public speaker, author, and consultant on youth, family, and education issues, Tom has made hundreds of presentations to organizations throughout the United States. These include school districts, faith communities, social service agencies, law enforcement, and programs directed towards high-risk youth and families. He has 20+ years of practical experience working with young people, adult educators, parents, and families.

Highlights include training and resource development during 7+ years as Director of the Center for Adolescent and Family Spirituality and as Director of Religious Education at Father Flanagan’s Boys Town. Served as a Co-Director of Formation for the diocese of Kalamazoo, MI, as a youth minister in Houston, TX, as a high school teacher and coach, and as a campus minister in a university setting. Published several resources including Pathways: Fostering Spiritual Growth Among At-Risk Youth, Caring Skills for Christian Families, The Rainbow Collection (A five-volume Youth Resource), and Plug Into the Power.

Currently Tom is developing curriculum and training resources for Flashing Your Brights® -How to be an effective helper for someone abusing alcohol or other drugs. He is also the creator of the traffic safety campaigns Keep Kids Alive Drive 25® , Check Your Speed® , No Need to Speed®  , SEAT BELTS – FASTENATING!® , STOP! TAKE 3 TO SEE® , and Stop Means Stop®  .

Tom has earned a Masters in Religious Education from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX and a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from Saint Louis University. He resides with Wendy, his wife, and their four children in Omaha, Nebraska.
