What is the KKAD25 Safety Pledge?
The facts speak for themselves. In an average year, over 40,000 loved ones die on U.S. roadways. Our behaviors behind the wheel, as passengers, cyclists and pedestrians can be the difference between life and death. The KKAD25 Safety Pledge invites each one of us to do what is in our power to do to make roadway and roadside environments as safe as possible for the benefit of everyone. So, make your pledge to be a part of the solution in reducing traffic deaths and injuries. In doing so, you commit to “practice the better” to create safer roads and a safer world for your loved ones. Remember, the best reasons to practice safe driving behaviors is to answer the questions, Who do you love? Who loves you?® In the beginning, middle, and end of each and every trip, every day, it’s all about preserving these relationships.
The pledge is broken into 3 commitments.
Commitment #1: I commit to observing all traffic laws.
I will:
Observe speed limits, and go slower when encounter pedestrians, cyclists, road construction workers, law enforcement personnel, children at play, and in school zones. Speeding accounts for at least 33% of traffic deaths (NHTSA) and speeders are 3X more likely to be in a crash (AAA) Remember, there is No Need To Speed®
Stop! Take 3 To See® -STOP completely at all STOP SIGNS - Look left, right, and left again to make sure all is clear before proceeding. Nationally, over 45% of drivers do not correctly observe Stop Signs (NHTSA)
Buckle Up Everyone Every Trip - Seat Belts-FASTENATING!® Nationally, 50% of those who die in crashes are not buckled up. This one action can preserve the lives of thousands of loved ones. (NHTSA)
Create Space - Each year, on average, tailgating leads to 1.7 million crashes. Allow at least 1 second for each 10 miles per hour of speed between you and the vehicle in front of you (FHWA) Remember, It’s Not A Race - Create Space!®
Drive CELL-FREE - More than 8% of fatal crashes are attributed to distracted driving (NHTSA) Using a cellular device - including hands-free - while driving reduces one’s field of vision to straight ahead (cancelling out peripheral vision - IIHS and University of Utah). Driver’s are 4X more likely to crash (NHTSA) and reaction time is slowed to that of someone with a .09 Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC), meaning one who is over the limit for intoxicated driving (University of Rhode Island). Phone Down! Eyes Up!
Never drive under the influence of alcohol or any other drug - Alcohol/Drug influence contributes to 1/3 of traffic deaths each year in the U.S. Be Aware! Drive With Care®
To hold yourself to this pledge, tape a photo of a loved one - perhaps your whole family - to your car console, glove compartment, or the back of a sun visor to remind you of your “why(s)” for making the Safety Pledge. Take the pledge to heart before ignition, every trip, every time. Thanks!
Commitment #2: I commit to invest $25 or more per month to KKAD25 (for at least one year) to keep our mission going and growing.
When you commit to the pledge, you commit to invest at least $25 per month in KKAD25 to give resources for this mission to be successful. Your financial commitment will last at least a year. (Can be ended earlier if need be.)
